Honey vs Sugar, Karate Kid part 2, Top Gun, sex advice, and the greatest sitcom of all time – Dinosaurs! If this episode doesn’t have it all then your heart is black and life will never bring you pleasure.
So this cooking show is all about making food that is friendly to digest, and thus will not murder folk with IBD (crohn’s and colitis). Coincidently the food is crazy healthy and good for anyone who’s trying to keep it tight. Sugar is kind of antithetical to that goal (I’ll wait for you to google ‘antithetical’… I did because I didn’t trust I knew what the word even meant after I thought to type it). But honey is a form of sugar… so what gives?
Turns out honey is money because it is kind of like pre-digested sugar. So it’s easier to digest and less likely to become food for unfriendly bacteria living in our guts. When those bacteria are fed we can experience inflammation and all sorts of crazy issues (e.g., DEATH!). Since the sugar molecules in honey (glucose and fructose) are not bound together into a disaccharide, but instead exist as individual monosaccharides it is easier for our bodies to digest.
Table sugar (sucrose) as a counter example is the same glucose and fructose molecules, but bound together into a disaccharide which our digestion needs to work to break apart for our bodies to make use of. If not broken apart, then it can be food for those bad guy bacteria in our lower GI tract. So we like honey. I’m not really saying it’s exactly healthy for you. It’s still sugar. So in excess it can still spike you blood sugar, and make you fat and whatnot. But its a better sweetener than table sugar and other options.
This video explains all, but mostly talks about Karate Kid part 2. Enjoy!
